IMF Managing Director acknowledges role of media ahead of World Press Freedom Day

SANTIAGO, Chile — AS the world prepares to celebrate World Press Freedom Day on May 3, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristalina Georgieva has praised the dedication of journalists worldwide.

"I want to start by saying that the work you do is hugely important because you are the transmission line of information that concerns the lives of people,” she told a group of journalists in Chile ahead of activities to recognize the day in Santiago, Chile.

The journalists were part of the IMF's training program, and the group included a representative from SKNVibes News.

Georgieva emphasized, "Very often, when you get the facts right and you write a story, it helps people to get more oriented in a world that has become quite confusing."

The United Nations, in its message for World Press Freedom Day, highlighted the day’s focus on journalism and freedom of expression within the context of the current global environmental crisis.

"Awareness of all facets of the global environmental crisis and its impact is critical for building democratic societies. Journalism plays a crucial role in achieving this goal," the United Nations stated.

The statement also noted the challenges journalists face while investigating and reporting on contemporary issues such as supply chain disruptions, climate migration, extractive industries, illegal mining, pollution, poaching, animal trafficking, deforestation, and climate change. Bringing these issues to light is essential for fostering peace and democratic values around the world.

Santiago, the capital of Chile, is at the forefront of this year's World Press Freedom Day activities, drawing journalists from around the globe for a series of events to mark the occasion.
