Charles Fort

Built between 1678 and 1689 to protect St. Kitts south-western shoreline during an attack. The fort was named after Charles I of England. During the early eighteenth century the fort served as a military post for the British. Then in 1890 when its operations became obsolete it was renamed Hanson House and turned into a lepers asylum.
