Spencer Luther Duggins was born on Central Street in Basseterre and started work at the St. Kitts (Basseterre) Sugar Factory in 1956 as an Apprentice Machinist. After completing his apprenticeship he was made a machinist and was assigned to the Sugar Factory Machine Shop. His work entailed shop repairs, scrapping and balancing of rollers, plumbing and fitting. Mr. Duggins worked in the sugar factory as a machinist until its closure in July 2005. He also worked for 5 years as Time Clerk in the Machine Shop Office before returning to the shop floor as a machinist.
Mr. Duggins played cricket for the Molineaux Cricket Team, the Sugar Factory Cricket Team and also played cricket for St. Kitts against Barbados in 1966 when Garfield Sobers first played at Warner Park. He also competed for St. Kitts in Leeward Island Tournament and was on the team when St. Kitts won the tournament in Montserrat in 1968 under Len Harris' Captaincy.
Mr. Duggins also played Domino for St. Kitts. He represented the island in Domino competitions overseas in Dominica, Guyana, St. Lucia and Antigua. Mr. Duggins played Steel Pan for over forty years and was lead pan player in the Silver Swords Steel Band from Temple Alley, Basseterre in the early nineteen sixties. Continuing his love for Steel Pan Mr. Duggins formed the Jingle Bells String Band and is the leader and lead pan player. The String Band plays in many cultural and community activities around the country and at many weddings and church activities.
Mr. Duggins in 1970, moved to Bourryeau Village. He has four children. Mr. Duggins served on the Christ Church/St. Mary's Anglican Church community vestry for 27 years. His most recent achievement is the production of a CD of traditional string band music. For his contribution to Industry and Culture he was awarded the "Independence Medal of Honour". |
