Clement Ellsworth Gilbert Senior was born in Mansion and worked all his working life in the Sugar Industry. He started at an early age as a cane cutter and cane packer on the field side of the industry.
He later took up employment at the Railway Department of the Sugar Factory as a switchman and Locomotive Driver for over 20 years. During crop time he worked as a siding clerk and out of crop as Supervisor of the Railway Bridge painting gang. Mr. Gilbert worked at the Railway Department of the S.S.M.C. for 44¬1/2 years.
Mr. Gilbert is a Barber with a long standing reputation in his community. In his younger years he played cricket for the community team. He was active in the many service of songs and concerts in the community and is still known for his professionalism on the harmonica (mouth organ) which he uses to thrill many audiences.
A devoted Christian for over 20 years Mr. Gilbert is credited for initiating morning devotion on the Belle Vue siding each morning which was heard throughout the railway system and overseas. This he continued even after he retired from the industry in 2001 until the last morning of the sugar crop in July 2005.
He is married and has twelve children. In 2005 he was awarded the "Independence Medal of Honour" for his contri¬bution to Industry and Community Service. |
