Young G gives Reality Check

Garel 'Young G' Dorsette

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - WHEN Young G of St. Pauls started ‘spittin’ his ‘fire’ 10 years ago, he fell in love with the rap game and there was no turning back for this ambitious rapper.

After ‘kickin’ it with his group Block Burnaz for a number of years beginning in 2001, and performing on shows with Beenie Man and Beres Hammond, Young G is now preparing to release his album entitled “Reality Check”, slated for July of this year.

Born Garel Dorsette, this young man is serious about making it in the entertainment industry without the cocky attitude most rappers are known to have.

Do not be fooled by his quiet demeanour; the lyrics in his songs which are no-nonsense, emotional and at times hard-hitting, do all the talking for him and they are usually full of meanings and challenge the listener to think.

At the tender age of 13, Young G realised that life was no game when his mom was brutally murdered by her ex-lover.

After many years of silence, Young G decided to pen all of his emotions, anger and questions about his mother’s murder in a very poignant song called “Hold On”, which will be featured in his new album.

He said the song is a simple one, “Letting my mom know that I will try my best to be a man and not go astray, because I know that is not what she would have wanted for me, and to live my life as she would have wanted me to.”

“After my mom died I realised that life is no game and that you can’t afford to take people for granted,” he said. “Moms are the next best thing to God and they must be cherished no matter what.”

“Gneika’s Song” is dedicated to his two-year-old daughter. The three-verse track is a promise to his daughter that he would always be there for her as long as he lives, and that he would teach her the right from the wrong and for her to be a leader and not a follower.

“I was just expressing the way I feel for my daughter,” he said.

Young G also said that he would like to encourage other fathers to always be there for their children to nurture, love and protect them because “we never know what life may throw at us”.

Apart from those two songs that have already been released, “No Stopping”, “Apologies”, “Pay the price”, “Everyday” and “True to my game” have also gotten some airplay on the local radios.

The feedback he has been getting from his songs are exactly what he wanted, as many are describing them as the deepest lyrics they have ever heard from any local artiste.

The album, which features 15 songs, was produced at TTO Records and includes some local artistes such as Sinika and Jro.

Young G hopes to pursue a singing career in England in the near future.
