Island Xpressions ‘Xpress Yourself’ a success

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CHIPPIE recently came in for high praises as the mobile provider demonstrated its support for the talents and efforts of local citizens who chose to express themselves in poetry.

One individual claimed that perhaps it was the faith Chippie has in the self-proclaimed local hip-hop ambassador, Samal ‘Z’Dan’ Duggins of Da Embassy, which caused the company to sponsor the Island Xpressions’ poetry night under the theme ‘Xpress Yourself’.

While another individual believes that “someone in upper management at Chippie is a lover of poetry and the spoken word” and jumped onboard as title sponsor of the event as soon as the idea was presented to the company.

Duggins is the organiser of the monthly Island Xpressions, and like his past successful ventures so was Xpresss Yourself held last Thursday evening at the Royal St. Kitts Hotel’s Cane Club.

The setting at the Royal St. Kitts Hotel’s Cane Club was superb, as it created a relaxed, tranquil atmosphere that was perfect for poetry reading.

Simply Amazing had the ball rolling with the first poem of the night and told SKNVibes that his poetry is a reflection of seeing life through his eyes.

“It’s like me playing God,” he said. “People may be going through the same stuff as me…life, on a whole, inspires me.”

He was followed by Vincent Fough, who recited well-written pieces including one that was in honour of the nation’s 25th Independence Anniversary.

Steve Whittaker, another local poet, also performed several pieces and had everyone in a lively mood over his poem about questions a friend asked him concerning facts of life.

Female poets also made their mark and Melissa Newell turned things up in her clever performance of ‘Defining Moments’ and ‘Day Break’.

After recitals of many wonderful poems, the audience was entertained by a group of independent musicians that played amazing music together. Although they weren’t a band, these individuals harmonised well and took the tone of the night to another notch.

As usual, there was an opportunity for poets to win a special phone from Chippie, and before the night ended the crowd cheered for ‘Laurent’ as their favorite poet of the night.

Duggins reminded the crowd of a poetry competition that is ongoing on their website www.islandxpressions.com, which is in honour of 25 years since St. Kitts and Nevis gained Independence from the British.

Persons are asked to vote for their favorite poet on the site where the winner can win a cash prize of EC$2 500.

Duggins said the winner would be announced at the next Island Xpressions scheduled for September 25.

Chippie’s Marketing Manager Alfred Harley created excitement among the audience when he announced that 25 cellular phones would be up for grabs for poets on that night (September 25).

Other poets who participated at the event include Yarayni Morton, Sister Imani, Ras Roots and Lesroy Williams.
