BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ORGANISER of the Independence Calypso Competition told SKNVibes that tomorrow, Thursday, September 4, the general public would know the names of the 25 calypsonians selected to compete in the September 16 event.

Troy ‘Spuddy’ Hendrickson told SKNVibes that the finalists should have been announced today, Wednesday, but during the judging last evening the judges encountered technical difficulties with some of the calypsonians’ music.

Hendrickson declared that the elimination round of the competition is different to the regular calypso shows held in St. Kitts.

He said the calypsonians were asked to submit their compositions and a panel of judges would listen to the songs from which scores would be based upon

lyrics (60 points) and music (40 points).

“Once the judging is completed we would announce everything tomorrow. It’s a panel of five judges from the registered judges that we have in St. Kitts and Nevis that are used to judge calypso shows,” he said.A total of 42 calypsonians have signed up to compete in the Independence Calypso Competition that will be held in Carnival Village.

Some of the calypsonians that are competing, including junior, senior and female contestants, are: the reigning National Calypso King, King Konris; Ayatollah; Socrates;  National Calypso Queen, Queen Anastasia; Contender; and Starshield.

“We also have Richie Buntin, who registered from overseas, and also calypsonians from Nevis including Astro, Hollywood, the reigning Culturama King, De Inspirer and more,” Hendrickson said.

“The show should be keenly contested, as the competitors’ compositions will be based on the Independence theme…Pride, Development, Progress, Independence, 25 years of Success.

The criteria are asking the calypsonians to be in support or against the theme, and they can even be witty,” Hendrickson said.

He also mentioned that instead of an official band for the night, as normally done at other calypso shows, there would be an all-star band, which is a selection of some of the best musicians, coming together to play on the night.

He said Kenrick Georges, composer of the National Anthem, would be the musical director of the band and he would be on the island to rehearse from September 10.

The Monarch of the competition will win a cash prize of EC$25 000, First Runner-up will get EC$15 000, Second Runner-up EC$10 000 and Third Runner-up EC$5 000. Additionally, all Finalists and non-placers will each receive EC$1 500.

On the final night the judging criteria will be as it is normally done at calypso shows with lyrics 40 points, music 30 points and live performances 30 points.
