Emancipation Concert, A Day of Music, Poetry and Dance
Date Posted: Monday 13 August, 2007

By Suelika N. Buchanan

The 10th Annual Emancipation Concert held at the Brimstone Hill Fortress was a thrilling and soothing experience.

When one was not “bobbing” their head to the pounding rhythms of African drumming by the Okolo Tegremantine drummers or being inspired by the powerful words of local poets like Tafari Ayinde and Meredith Warner we were moving from side to side in our chairs by the songs from King Socrates and Masud Sadiki.

Brimstone Hill never looked so good as it still is one of if not the most attractive places in St. Kitts. The lovely green landscape was highlighted by the audience which was one of the largest crowds the concert has seen.

Over twenty performers delivered their tributes towards Emancipation and what it meant to them.

Meredith Warner delivered two poems that were fitting to the occasion one was an ode to Brimstone Hill which she titled, “Brimstone Hill” and the other “Escape”.

Ken Crossley, Seana Williams and Raphael Yorke also delivered their powerful poems to an appreciative audience.

No Emancipation celebration could be complete without the “Songs of Freedom” pioneer himself the late Bob Marley who’s hit, “Redemption Song” was exceptionally delivered by our home grown superstar Masud Sadiki.

Masud Sadiki then later on performed his hit tune, “I Wonder How” which was fitting for the occasion. In this song Sadiki wonders how those that commit crime and other wrong doings sleep at nights.

Other performers included Davida Browne, Mount Zion Church, Mavincia Browne and Phillip Brown and Sankofa who sang, “The Victory”.

Calypsonians also sang songs that were most fitting for the occasion including King Socrates who sang “Ode to Toussaint” that was a song he recently sang at a competition in Antigua.

Singing Jackie who is a former Calypso Queen sang a song titled “Much More Than Words” a song which she recorded ten years ago.

Forest, Lady Angie and King Phonsie who sang, “One People, One Nation” while Larry Armony a.k.a. Alamoulou sang “Caribbean”.

Armony is also the General Manager of the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Society and said that he thought the concert was very successful.

Armony said that one of the problems they’ve had in the past was attracting church groups because of how late the concert started and the time clashing with the afternoon services.

But he said that this year they were happy to have the Mount Moriah Church apart of the program as he feels the Church and Christianity played an important role in the development of our culture.

“This concert is for the people, I think that things went very well and a large measure of the success came from the performers and the band we had so we’re very happy for that,” Armony said.

He also said that the feedback from those that attended were good and said that the audience felt the performances by the performers were of great substance and were refreshing and uplifting.

The band for the concert was “The Band” which members were introduced at the event, the band leader is Mickey Stokes.
