Beaumont Park Jockey succumbs to injuries

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONE of the jockey’s at the Beaumont Park race track has recently died as a result of injuries sustained at the race track on Sunday, August 8.

     

    SKNVibes has learnt that the jockey, 26 year-old Domonique Smith of Jamaica who was thrown off of ‘Our Bud’ race horse and struck his head and body on the starting gate, died on August 29.

     

    In an interview with Richard Cummings, Beaumont Park LTD’s General Manager he said that Smith’s accident is an unfortunate one.

     

    “The Beaumont Park family is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of jockey Domonique Smith. Dominique was a promising racing talent who was loved and respected by his peers and his many racing fans,” he said.

     

    Cummings said that prior to the start of the third race ‘Our Bud’ became out of control and Smith was unable to control him.

     

    He said that the young jockey stayed on the horse trying to control it but was eventually thrown off and struck his head and body on the railing.

     

    He lost consciousness immediately and was taken to the JNF Hospital where he underwent several surgeries before he was flown out to his home land Jamaica where he also underwent another surgery before succumbing to his injuries.

     

    The accident resulted in Smith suffering a Brain/head injury trauma.

     

    “Everyone is distraught. Domonique will always be remembered as a consummate professional with an infectious smile and engaging personality,” a grief stricken General Manager told this Media House.

     

    “Racing has lost a truly remarkable young man. The management and staff of Beaumont Park extend deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Domonique Smith and pray for their comfort and sustenance in this time of grief,” said Cummings.
