BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE January Assizes will begin tomorrow (Jan. 18) at Basseterre High Court and among the three murder cases to be heard is that of the woman who had allegedly stabbed her granddaughter to death while she was asleep on Sunday, July 11, 2010.

Melvina ‘Mary’ Kelly of Saddlers Village was charged with the murder of eight-year-old Belisha Edwards at about 11:30 a.m. on July 13, 2010.

Edwards was the daughter of Kelly’s son Leroy Elliott and she was residing in Conaree Village with her mother Usha Edwards.

At the time of the incident, reports stated that Edwards had left her mother’s home to spend the summer vacation with her grandmother.

The incident was said to have occurred in the wee hours of the morning.

Kelly’s trial will be one of three murder cases that are new matters for the January Assizes. The other cases involve Razba Matthew and Denver ‘Backa’ Fyfield.

The 27-year-old Fyfield of Stapleton Village was charged with the murder of Hendricks ‘Jahdeo’ Roberts, who was found lying motionless along a dirt road leading from Stapleton Village to Fountain Estate in St. Peters on June 21, 2010.

At the time of the incident, Police Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Vaughan Henderson said a report was made at the Stapleton Police Station at about 5:30 a.m. that a man, believed to be dead, was seen lying face-down on the main dirt road leading to Fountain Estate.

He stated: “Police responded immediately and investigations revealed that the body was that of 27-year-old Hendricks Roberts of Stapleton Village. He was pronounced dead by District Medical Officer Dr. Mervyn Laws, who declared that there is no apparent cause of death at this time. The police however are treating this case as a homicide.”

An autopsy performed on Roberts’ body revealed that death was caused by cerebral contusion to the head, which are scattered areas of bleeding on the surface of the brain. This is normally caused by a blow to the head.
