Bus driver convicted for unlawful carnal knowledge

By: Suelika N. Creque, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A 12-member jury yesterday (Mar. 22) unanimously convicted bus driver Keithly Griffin at the Basseterre High Court on a charge of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 16.

Griffin, of Waterworks, Cayon, will be sentenced by His Lordship Justice Errol Thomas on Thursday, March 31.

Like all sexually-related cases, this one was tried in camera and it began on Monday, March 21.

This media house however learnt that the incident occurred sometime in February 2009, between 10:00 and 11:00 in the morning, while the girl was on her way to attend a sport practice.

SKNVibes also learnt that the victim, who was under the age of 16 at the time, went into Griffin’s bus with the intention of attending the sport practice, but he decided to take her to a location on a hill between Bird Rock and Frigate Bay and allegedly had sex with her.

Four witnesses including the victim were called to testify on behalf of the prosecution which was led by Director of Public Prosecution Paulina Hendrickson, while Griffin, who was represented by Senior Counsel Dr. Henry Browne, did not present any witness to support his not guilty plea.

The jury had deliberated for a little over an hour and returned with a guilty verdict at approximately 3:00 p.m.

This has been the second time that Griffin was tried for the same offence. The first time was at the September 2010 Assizes and it had ended in a hung jury.
