Charges filed in Central Bank theft

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados-COREY ROCK, 25, was officially charged Wednesday (Nov. 19) for the theft of BDS $1.4 million (approximately US $707, 000) from the Barbados Central Bank.

Rock, who worked as a messenger at the bank, was charged with stealing the money in brand new $100 notes between July 1, 2006 and October 31, 2008.

The accused was represented by attorney Andrew Pilgram at the court proceedings, who appealed to Magistrate Christopher Birch to release Rock on bail because he did not pose a flight risk.

Birch refused, however, and remanded Rock to prison because the investigation into the case remains ongoing. This was largely due to the sworn statements of Sergeant Glenda Carter.

“Others are in custody and others are being sought, and I believe that if he is granted bail there may be some interference or hindrance,” Caribbean 360 reported the officer as saying before the court.~~Adz:Right~~

Rock was not required to file a plea in the case during the hearing, though his next court date of December 17 was set.

In a prior statement, Bank officials said that they would be fully reviewing security and evaluation processes, as well as conducting a full audit of all funds to ensure no other gaps in the system could be exploited in the future.
