BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE recent thunderstorm experienced in the Federation on Monday night (Jul. 19) into Tuesday morning has adversely affected a number of families in St. Pauls Village.
Reports reaching SKNVibes indicated that due to the heavy rainfall, water had caused serious damages to furniture in many homes and also to properties, as well as to the foundation of some buildings. However, as it was in Central Basseterre and other affected areas, there were no reports of loss of lives or limbs.
Responding to the needs of residents in that affected area, the St. Kitts-Nevis Red Cross Society, on Wednesday, July 21, distributed relief packages to eight families after an assessment was made by the organisation’s Disaster Coordinator, Kerie Greene.
A press release from the Society informed that the relief packages contained blankets, pillows and tarpaulins, and were distributed by volunteers.
“Some eight families benefitted from our relief packages of blankets, pillows and tarpaulins. These packages were distributed by a team of Red Cross volunteers to the households badly damaged by flood waters. Many of the families receiving these relief packages were grateful to the Red Cross for its assistance during their time of need.”
The release stated that during the Disaster Coordinator’s visit to the area, it was determined that the water damages were due to “serious drainage concerns”.
It also stated that members of the non-profit organisation are currently in the field continuing their assessment of damages in the communities and would continue to distribute relief packages to all those affected.
The St. Kitts-Nevis Red Cross Society is also reminding all residents of the Federation that “although it was not a hurricane, the constant rain, thunder and lightning was a serious reminder to residents to be prepared for the current hurricane season that we are in and which has been forecast to be an active one”.
