Ministry erects jacks on Warner Park collapsing wall

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AFTER 25 days since the southern wall of the Warner Park Cricket Stadium was damaged by thunderstorm, efforts are now being made to rectify the situation.

On Thursday, August 12, a number of employees of the Public Works Department were seen erecting jacks in an effort to prevent the wall from collapsing on a section of Lozack Road.

This safety measure was supervised by the Inspector of Works, Val Whyte, who told SKNVibes that some 26 jacks were erected and work would soon commence to repair the damaged structure.

When asked about the cost of the damages and their repairs to the wall, Whyte said that would have to come from an engineer’s standpoint.

“I don’t know about the cost and all that…we were just told to put up the jacks with the hope of them stopping the walling from coming down for the time being,” he added.

He also stated that the jacks were erected as a precautionary measure in event of a similar thunderstorm, knowing that this time of the year is the hurricane season.

In a previous article, a female resident in the area said that at about 4:00 a.m. on Monday, July 19, she was awakened by a loud cracking sound. On looking through her window, she saw a section of the wall opposite her home was damaged, causing it to lean precariously over the parapet on the southern side of the Cricket Stadium, which also damaged a utility post

Since then, as a safety precaution, barriers were erected to prevent pedestrians from using the parapet within the immediate area.
