BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis has been encouraged to give thanks and praise to Almighty God for sparing it from the ravages of Hurricane Earl.

Minister of National Security the Hon. Sam Condor, in an address to the nation which followed the passage of Hurricane Earl, gave an overview of the system’s course and the impact it had on the Federation.

He explained that adverse weather conditions were experienced from as early as 5:00 Sunday evening (Aug. 29) and deteriorated as the night progressed. The centre of the system, he further explained, passed the Federation sometime between 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.

“The St. Kitts and Nevis Meteorological office at the R. L. B. International Airport, recorded wind gusts of approximately 44 MPH and 3.8 inches of rainfall between 8pm on Sunday and 2:00 p.m. on Monday. Heavy rainfall, thunder and lightening were experienced as the hurricane passed some 73 miles north of St. Kitts and Nevis at 5:00 a.m. as a Category 2 hurricane with winds of some 105 miles per hour.”

Minister Condor noted that according to the initial impact report he received, Hurricane Earl left roof damage, flooded roads, downed utility poles and lines, roads blocked by boulders, fallen trees and downed fences in some communities and a number of fires.

“…I have been in contact with a number of my colleagues throughout the country and in Nevis as well…and so I have a good idea of what’s happening in both St. Kitts and Nevis from my colleagues; they are reporting minor damage. As I speak, there have been no reports of accidents or any threat to life as a result of the passage of the hurricane.”

The National Security Minister expressed that the Federation was spared because of “the mercies of God” and further noted that “we can be thankful that God has protected us from (a) more severe impact”.

The rescue and assistance effort began during the storm and was executed by civic-minded individuals and members of the security forces. Minister Condor expressed gratitude to these persons for their invaluable assistance.

“We want, at this time, to give thanks to the security forces and other recovery personnel and other individuals of good will, who have been assisting with recovery efforts. And what I’ve seen, it has been really, really commendable. People are coming out in their numbers volunteering their support, volunteering their equipment, volunteering their time and their effort and that is very, very, very good. It has been a real encouraging scene around Basseterre…and I have gotten that same report from both the rural areas on St. Kitts and also on Nevis.”

The public was encouraged by Condor to pay close attention to the media and keep abreast of activity in the Atlantic Ocean which could pose a particular threat to the Caribbean region, more specifically, St. Kitts and Nevis.
