AE flight makes emergency stop at RLB Int’l after being struck by lightning

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AN American Eagle flight traveling from San Juan, Puerto Rico en route to Trinidad, had to make an unscheduled stop at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, St. Kitts after it was struck by lightning.

Initial reports reaching SKNVibes were that the pilot of the aircraft made an emergency landing in St. Kitts subsequent to it sustaining possible damage from the lightning strike.

General Manager (GM) of American Airlines/American Eagle, St. Kitts, Hugh Mallelieu, speaking exclusively with SKNVibes, confirmed that the tail of the aircraft was struck by lightning.

The GM explained that the aircrafts are fitted with equipment to handle these types of situations.  He further explained that the equipment is known as “anti-static rods” or “static dischargers” which would, when the aircraft is struck by lightning, disperse the energy and release if from the aircraft, effectively minimizing damage to the airplane.

Mallelieu said, opting to err on the side of caution, the aircraft – an ATR72 which seats 64 – made the unscheduled stop in St. Kitts and landed without casualty. An engineer from San Juan, Puerto Rico, is scheduled to arrive in the Federation shortly to attend to the aircraft, Mallelieu explained.

After the plane is inspected and it is deemed fit for operation, the approximate 17 passengers will embark the American Eagle flight and it will proceed to its scheduled destination. However, this media house is not certain as to what time that will take place.
