“A leader extraordinaire and deserves to govern for another term”

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis, January 20TH 2011 (CUOPM) – Former five-term United States Virgin Islands legislator, Sen. the Hon. Roosevelt David has hailed the “decisive and creative leadership” of Nevis Premier the Hon. Joseph Parry.

The Nevisian-born senator who was guest speaker at a Gala Dinner in Premier parry’s honour at the Four Seasons on Saturday night, confidently listed the reopening of the Four Seasons Resort, the construction of homes, infrastructural development, the education of Nevisian students, the facilitation of the Sea Bridge operation and dealing with the worldwide financial and economic crisis.

“Nevis could not have chosen a more appropriate and compenent leader, particularly during this global financial meltdown and near collapse of most of the world’s financial markets. The ripple effect that trickled down to these islands has had a devastating impact, but the captain of your ship held a steady course and through his ingenuity and the support of his Cabinet members and advisers, he kept the ship afloat and averted catastrophe on his people,” Senator David told over 200 patrons among them Deputy Governor General of Nevis, His Honour Mr. Eustace John and Mrs. John; Deputy Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Hon. Sam Condor and Mrs. Condor; Attorney General Hon. Patrice Nisbett; Federal Minister of Health, Hon. Marcella Liburd; Deputy Premier of Nevis, Hon. Hensley Daniel and Mrs. Daniel; Ministers of the Nevis Island Administration; Speaker of the St. Kitts and Nevis National Assembly, Hon. Curtis Martin and Mrs. Martin; President of the Nevis Island Assembly, Mrs. Marjorie Morton and Ambassador of the Republic of China on Taiwan, His Excellency Miguel Li-Jey Tsao.

Staying there is no substitute for decisive and creative leadership, Senator David boldly stated that “Nevisians are eternally blessed that a Moses has risen in your midst.”

“The global economic crisis has claimed the jobs of millions of individuals across the globe. Doctors lost their jobs, nurses, police officers, and teachers, private sector employees also fell victims. Closer to home in the Caribbean, some 500 thousand jobs were on the line in Cuba, in Puerto Rico 30,000 government employees and many other Caribbean islands experienced similar fate. Did this happen in Nevis? The answer is a resounding no. There are similarities with the USVI and Nevis. People did not lose their jobs in large numbers, due to the fact that visionary leaders are at the helm,” said Senator David.

He reminded his audience that the Four Seasons Hotel was embroiled in complex and complicated financial and legal wrangling, which created uncertainty of its re-opening.

“I want you to know that this Premier cleverly and prudently helped to mitigate the situation, and tonight we are here. You see, J.W. Parry understands that when investments are embraced, jobs are created, more money circulates and the treasury benefits, so that the delivery of public services can be paid for. You have a leader who is forward thinking and wants to make sure that his people prosper,” continued Sen. David, who added:

“A good leader invests in his people. No investment in a people that satisfies their needs could have any quantifying value, no matter how huge, that is not worth the while. I reference the drag strip built through creative ways particularly for our young people who have a stake in this. There are those who criticize for no obvious reason, but jealousy, and would probably like to see this country in an primitive stage, so in the event Christopher Columbus returns, he could immediately recognize and identify those things he left behind no change! No progress.  J.W. Parry is a 21st century leader who continues to augment the beauty of this Caribbean gem by smart development and infrastructure improvements.”

He described the support and facilitation of the sea bridge operation by Premier Parry and his Nevis Reformation Parry Administration as “one of genius.”

“The idea has been around for decades, but inaction, procrastination, indecisiveness, lack of vision and even down right deterrence and vindictive pushback’s, prevented implementation of such an important economic activity and service, which should have been effectuated a long time ago. Trade and commerce, relationships, job creation and enhancements have been tremendously improved and a necessary void has been filled,” said the former USVI legislator.

Sen. David referred to the unprecedented large numbers of students who are given financial assistance in providing them with free text books by an NRP Administration and its leader “who believes education is first, and everything else will fall in place.”

He lauded Premier Parry’s NRP Administration vision of alternative energy sources and achievements in other areas that have improved the quality of life of the people of Nevis.

““Recognizing the huge cost of electricity, this leader has wisely embraced alternative energy in wind power and geothermal energy as so to bring relief to his people. Significant improvements are continually being made to roads, and recreation centers are being multiplied. The quality of life Nevis continues to be so rapidly improved, there is no need to go back to the days of Columbus. Honorable premier, I am very pleased that you and your government has taken the initiative in naming land marks in Cotton Ground after stalwarts Livingstone Sargeant, Eustace “Tessy” Nisbett Derek Parry and Elquemedo Willett,” said Mr. David.

“People are working; people can put food on the table. Proven leadership is evident, and you know that you have you don’t have know what you will forget,” said Mr. David, who recalled visiting Nevis during the 1990’s and driving around with Joseph Walcott Parry.

“I was accused of bringing a suitcase of money to influence the election for Parry. While there was no truth to that the right man won election. The next accusation came after the secession move was defeated. I orchested a plan with Parry, I was told and screwed up in Nevis, because we aborted their plan. While that too was false, the right decision was made, so I don’t have a problem being on the right side,” said Sen. David.

He said that the people of Nevis are better off today than when the NRP administration took the reins of Government and feels proud when persons who visit Nevis praise the island for the significant advancement made,.

“This did not just evolve. It has taken vision, planning, execution of hard work. J. W. Parry is a leader extraordinaire and deserves to govern for another term,” said Sen. David.
