BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE St. Peter’s Eagle Boyz Club has recently concluded a successful week of activities, and the young participants were advised to be guided by the Holy Bible in addition to the wise instructions they get from their parents and other responsible members in their community.

Held under the theme ‘Empowering our boys to be responsible men’, the activities began on Monday (Apr. 11) and ended on Friday (Apr. 15) at the St. Peter’s Community Centre.

The Week of Activities included various professionals speaking to the young males on topics such as Personal Hygiene, Communication Skills, Child Abuse, Crafts, Anger Management, Puberty and Oral Hygiene.

The participants visited the Taiwanese Agro-processing Plant and were taken on a tour where they went through the island to learn more about the history and culture of Kittitians.

They were also taught Craft by Marilyn Brown and proudly showed off what they learnt in a display of doll ornaments and jewellery.

One of the boys, Jerdel Harris, was very proud of a pair of earrings he made and said that the week of activities was fun and he would invite his friends to join the club.

On the morning of the final day, members of Operation Future visited the group and held discussions on Drug Abuse.

Later that day, Senior Education Officer of the Ministry of Education, Michael Blake spoke to them about the importance of following directions and obeying instructions.

Speaking with SKNVibes, Blake said, “I was asked to speak to the young boys about following directions and obeying instructions, which I think is extremely opportune and very important for young people to understand that instructions are for their own good.

“When they follow directions and obey instructions, chances are that they’ll walk the straight and narrow road and society will be better off.”

Blake also advised the young boys to start following directions and obeying instructions from all their leaders, including those within their community, church and school as well as their parents, who are their main leaders.

“I ended by advising that the best book or manual for instructions is the Bible. It has instructions for all sexes, all ages and all statuses in life,” he said.

Referring to the name of the group, ‘Eagle’, Blake told the boys that they should be like the large winged-birds soaring to the highest height in their achievement of set goals.

Eagle Boyz Club is the brainchild of Mary Nurse, Shauna Maynard and Anita Davis. These women had decided to form the club after realising how much the gang situation was negatively impacting the young in St. Peter’s.

Since its formation some five years ago, the group meets every Wednesday and would arrange various activities when schools are closed for holidays such as Easter, summer and Christmas.

Nurse, the group’s Public Relations Officer, said that the week of activities was a success and extended gratitude to the sponsors - Advance Children Foundation, Ocean Cold Storage and all those individuals who contributed, including Kevon Pennyfeather and Faye McCurdy.

“Firstly, we have thanked God for protecting and keeping us together, and we would like to say thanks to the Hon. Eugene Hamilton, Jonathon Bass, Recaldo Harvey, John Bass, Jean Fahie, Alfred Clarke, Deacon Brian Chambers, Judith Bass, Elizabeth Maynard, Fay Mocardy, and to all parents who sent the boys out to the week of activities,” Nurse said.
