BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A man is currently in custody assisting police with their investigations into yesterday morning’s break-in of the Island Bakeries Deli on Fort Street, Basseterre.

According to Police Press and Public Relations Officer (PRO), Inspector Vaughan Henderson, yesterday (Apr. 27) at approximately 1:55 a.m., officers at the Basseterre Police Station had responded to an activated alarm on Fort Street and discovered a business place was broken into.

“The officers’ investigations led them to the Island Bakeries Deli situated at Fort Street and they discovered that the business place was broken into and a number of items were stolen, but the perpetrators had already fled the scene.

“The owner and manager of the business place indicated that the business was secured at about 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 20101. The scene was processed by members of the Crime Scene Department and there is one suspect in custody assisting police with their investigations,” the PRO said.

Speaking with Franklyn Brand, Managing Director of Island Bakeries, he told this media house that the thief/thieves had stolen two cases of Heineken, one case of Red Bull, a small amount of petty cash and a quantity of assorted sweets.

Commenting on the recent increase in house and business breakages, Brand said he is at his wits end in having to regularly spend money unnecessarily for the protection of his employees and business places.

“Currently, it is a very hostile and expensive environment to operate in, especially for high profile businesses such as Island Bakeries. This is not the first time thieves had targeted Island Bakeries and, as a result, we have to be spending excessively in protection of our workers and business entities,” Brand said.

He also indicated that additional security systems have recently been implemented at all of his company’s outlets.
