Helicopter lands in CEMACO parking lot for car wash

Basseterre, St. Kitts: To wash a Police car during your school’s fund raising car wash is something out of the ordinary and to wash a helicopter....yes a helicopter…is extraordinary but the out of the ordinary and the extraordinary did happen Friday afternoon last, November 23rd, at the Seventh Day Adventist Primary School Car Wash, at the CEMACO Parking Lot, New Town.
An ingenious collaborative sponsorship effort between the Leeward Islands Helicopters Tours and Itsy Bitsy Wear Designs enabled the young students to raise US$500 to assist them in purchasing chairs for their school.

Initially, the Home and School Association (HASA) planned a car wash at the CEMACO Parking Lot, but on the same day of the activity, the Principal of the SDA School, Mrs. Blancette, called the President of the HASA, Mr. Clyde Richardson, and told him that a arrangement are being taken care of to have a helicopter flown in to be washed as well!
How did this happen? A Helicopter? In the CEMACO Parking Lot?
One of the Grade 6 students, Zahrea Franklin, approached Mr. Michael Huttenlocker, of Leeward Islands Helicopters Tours and told him about their fund raising drive. He was so impressed by her genuine appeal for assistance that he formulated the idea to have the helicopter flown in to be washed.
Zahrea’s sister, Mikieda Franklin, who own Itsy Bitsy Wear Designs, is a good friend of Captain Huttenlocker, and both decided to make a combined donation of US$500.
The afternoon was rather thrilling. The students participating in the car wash were quite eagerly anticipating the arrival of the helicopter. However, prior to the helicopter’s arrival, the Police car came and it was washed. The officers then cleared the area for the helicopter to land.
The Helicopter did not come empty though. Aboard were Zahrea and the Principal Blanchette, who were given a free flight.
The crowning moment of the helicopter wash was when one female student was hoisted atop the aircraft to wipe down the rotors.
Leeward Islands Helicopter Tours commenced operations in St. Maarten three years ago but Captain Huttenlocker envisioned an operation in St. Kitts and he agitated the relevant authorities for permission to begin operations on St. Kitts. His efforts were rewarded in September, when he received approval for the initiative.
He noted that his tour business is steadily growing and noted that a number of local hotels are working along with him to feature the thrilling helicopter tour experience.
The regular cost for the tour is US$125 but December 8th and 9th are being recognized by Leeward Islands Helicopters Tours as St. Kitts Day and for that day locals can get a tour for US$20.
Each tour can accommodate three persons.
Itsy Bitsy Wear Designs is also a relatively new business located in the TDC Mall. The designs will be officially launched during a fashion show on December 1st, at Carnival City.
An appeal is being made to corporate citizens to come aboard the fund raising drive of the Seventh Day Adventist School.
