Nevis Agriculture Show offers education and fun

 CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS – UNDER the theme “Micro Farming: The Driving Force for Agriculture Past, Present and Future”, Nevis’ 14th Annual Agricultural Open Day was officially opened yesterday by Premier Joseph Parry.
The annual event, organised by the Department of Agriculture, is being held at The Villa in the vicinity of Charlestown Secondary School. It was opened to the public yesterday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and the schedule will be the same for today.
With an entrance fee of only EC$2, patrons will be educated on better farming techniques and the event is also fun-packed.
The Agricultural Open Day will also highlight up to date technology and services offered by the Department of Agriculture and its Allied Agencies, such as CARDI, HCA and Mission
Taiwan, among others. It will further showcase other technologies that are useful to farmers, backyard gardeners and other stakeholders in the agriculture industry..jpg)
Other highlights are the Agro Processors Cooperative usual product sale, food preparations, utilising local produce, fruits and vegetables display, and a friendly bartenders’ competition.
The objective of the Agricultural Open Day is to highlight appropriate technology necessary for agricultural development. It is also hoped that the Open Day would create a greater awareness of the activities of the Department of Agriculture, as it seeks to foster greater collaboration with its clients and allied agencies to showcase high quality produce as well as to sensitise the general public and primary school groups.
The 14th Agricultural Open Day is under the patronage of George Sutton who was awarded for serving in the Department of Agriculture for 41 years (1950 to 1991). Others awarded yesterday included Crop Farmer for 2008, Donald Daniel; Most Throughputs at Marketing 2008, Donald Daniel; Livestock Farmer for 2008, Clayton Liburd; Most Throughputs at Abattoir 2008, Samuel Burke; and Fisher for 2008, Clivin Christmas.
