Basseterre, St. Kitts – A local footballer is reportedly making a steady recovery after being shot during a robbery attempt in the US Virgin Islands this past Saturday (Nov. 15).

Steadroy Charles, 27, was shot in the abdomen shortly after noon on Saturday while making his way through Simmonds Alley in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas.

Charles is the captain of the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association’s (SKNFA) Premier Division Conaree Football Club.
Reports indicate that police officers responded to a shots fired call almost immediately after the incident and found Charles on the ground clutching his wound and bleeding.

According to The Virgin Islands Daily News, Charles told police that he was approached by a “slim man with dreadlocks” who demanded all of his money and the gold chain he was wearing at the time.

When Charles refused to give up the items the man shot him, grabbed his wallet and chain and then fled the scene on foot.
Charles was immediately transported to Schneider Hospital where he underwent surgery and is currently listed in serious but stable condition. ~~Adz:Right~~

Officials at the SKNFA told SKNVibes that they were gravely concerned when they were informed that Charles was “fighting for his life” over the weekend.

Additionally, the incident cost Charles the chance to lead Conaree in their scheduled match against the KFC Trinity United F.C. at Sunday’s SKNFA National League opener. The game was postponed until a later date.
