BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – PERSONS seeking inner peace and relaxation are invited to attend tomorrow’s (Mar. 14) Public Programme on Dealing with Stress and Crime at the Basseterre High School Auditorium.

The Programme will be facilitated by Trinidadians Vijai Sadal and Sister Vishantie Boodram, who both possess years of experience in meditation and yoga. They are affiliated with the Brahma Kumaris Raja Yoga Centre, which is an offshoot of the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University (BKWSU).

According to Sadal, the discussion would focus on dealing with stress and teaching the art of meditation. The Personal Development Coach expounded about the benefits of meditation, noting it would improve the quality of people’s inner lives, their ability to concentrate and make decisions, and their ability to relax and be themselves.

He also asserted his stance on the issue of stress and tension.

“Some people think stress is due to external situations, such as time factors and financial restrictions. However, stress is the way we perceive these external issues. All of them can trigger stress but they don’t have to. We have to change the way we perceive them so we see threats as opportunities.

“Stress is a choice; we can choose to accept stress because we choose to accept other people’s perceptions of ourselves. While we appreciate positive things we don’t have to make them a part of our identity,” Sadal said.

Boodram pointed to meditation as a technique that could assist in this self-identification process. She revealed that Saturday’s session would include a brief workshop on the procedures and ideas involved in meditation.

Sadal described the effects of stress and reinforced its negative effects on the mind and body.

“Stress can affect someone’s health. If we keep our lives in a positive state or a happy mood or a better state of mind, it kills the negative hormones and cells within the body that create diseases. Persons who attend the Programme will gain insight into what they can do to lead stress-free, happy lives,” he declared.

The BKWSU is an NGO institution comprising of 8 500 centres in 110 countries. A press release issued by the University states that its mission is to develop attributes of leadership and personal integrity through the use of spiritual education.
