The islands of Saint Christopher and Nevis were ruled as a Crown Colony from 1877 to 1937. Due to unrest in the Caribbean in the 1930's constitutional reforms were introduced, part of which was the introduction of elected members of the Legislative Council.

Elections

1955
A new constitution was introduced which allowed for General Elections. General Elections were held in St Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla. There were a total of eight seats contested; five in St Kitts, two in Nevis and one in Anguilla. The St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party led by Robert Bradshaw won all eight seats.
 
1957
The Labour Party won all five seats in St. Kitts, whilst Independents, Eugene Walwyn and Wilmot Nichols won a seat each in Nevis.
 
1961
The Labour Party again won all five seats in St. Kitts, the United National Movement lead by Eugene Walwyn won both seats in Nevis.
 
1966
The Labour Party again won all five seats in St. Kitts. In Nevis the United National Movement wins one seat whilst the Peoples Action Movement won the other.
 
 1971
The Labour Party again won all five seats in St. Kitts. The Nevis Reformation Party lead by Ivor Stevens won one seat in Nevis while the Peoples Action Movement won the other.
 
 
 
1975
The Labour Party again won all seven seats in St. Kitts. The Nevis Reformation Party won two seats in Nevis.
 
1980
The Labour Party again won four seats, whilst the Peoples Action Movement won three seats in St. Kitts. The NRP in Nevis again won both seats on the island. The NRP in Nevis PAM in St. Kitts joined forces to form the government with Dr. Kennedy A. Simmonds the leader of PAM becoming the new Premier.
 
1983
In 1983 St Kitts and Nevis gained independence from Britain and became the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis. Dr. Kennedy A. Simmonds became the first Prime Minister of the Federation.
 
1984
PAM took six seats in St Kitts, Labour two and NRP won all three seats in Nevis.
 
1989
PAM took six seats in St Kitts, Labour two and NRP won all three seats in Nevis.
 
1993
PAM and Labour each won four seats in St Kitts while CCM won two in Nevis and NRP took one.
 
1995
Dr. Denzil Douglas Labour party won seven seats in St Kitts and PAM one, while CCM won two in Nevis and NRP took one.
 
2000
In 2000 Federal Elections, Labour retained power by defeating PAM eight seats to none. In Nevis CCM won two and NRP took one.
