Roadtown, Tortola- The Ministry of Health and Social Development hosted two “very productive” Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) meetings last week.

That assessment came at a press conference which followed the 11th OECS Health Ministers’ Meeting and the 22nd OECS Pharmaceutical Procurement Service Board Meeting, held on September 11 and 12 at Long Bay Beach Resort. The meetings had separate agenda and participants, but both were chaired by Grenada’s Minister of Health Honourable Karl Hood.

Honourable Hood joined the Territory’s Minister of Health and Social Development Honourable Dancia Penn, OBE, QC and Head of the OECS Pharmaceutical Procurement Service Dr. James Fletcher in a wrap-up press conference on Friday, at the close of the two meetings.

Among other things Honourable Hood confirmed that the Virgin Islands Government hosted “two very productive meetings” that addressed a number of important topics, such as a strategy to combat counterfeit medicines. Honourable Penn told the press about a need for legislation within the OECS to be reviewed and amended, where necessary, to criminalise the supply of counterfeit medicines. ~~Adz:Right~~

The Minister’s comment was supported by Dr. Fletcher, who said there have been cases in which persons have died as a result of using counterfeit medicines that contained false ingredients. “Counterfeit drugs are often produced by persons who are trying to make an easy dollar,” he said.

Agenda items during the 11th OECS Health Ministers’ meeting included the status of decisions from the 10th Health Ministers’ Meeting, the OECS Health Unit, chronic non-communicable diseases, OECS Harmonised Disaster Preparedness Plan, the Pan American Health Organisation’s Technical Cooperation Programme with the OECS, and the re-alignment of the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre.

Meantime the 22nd OECS Pharmaceutical Procurement Service Board Meeting’s agenda covered issued such as the organisation’s 2008-2009 budget and a feasibility study on the pooled procurement of dialysis fluids and supplies. The meeting’s agenda also included a video presentation on counterfeit medicines and discussion of strategies to combat counterfeit medicines.

Previously known as the Eastern Caribbean Drug Service, the OECS Pharmaceutical Procurement Service was established in 1986. It is a formal grouping of nine Eastern Caribbean countries namely Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It was established under a project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
