BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TEAMS participating in the annual Golden Rock Regatta visited St. Kitts briefly this week, cementing the island’s status as a popular pit stop for the prestigious event.

The Regatta, which is in its fourth year of competition, has included St. Kitts in the race package every year since its inception.

Sailing enthusiasts are attracted to the annual event, which offers them the opportunity to brave the elements and sail around the Eastern Caribbean. This year, the Regatta is being contested between 15 teams from countries including the US, Canada and the Netherlands.

The Regatta began on Monday, November 10 in St. Maarten with a pursuit race to St. Barths. Participants travelled to St. Kitts the following day and from there went on to St. Eustatius. Two races will be conducted up and down the island before the competition concludes tomorrow (Nov. 14) with a return race to St. Maarten.

According to Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism Lloyd Lazar, St. Kitts’ inclusion in this event is indicative of the Ministry’s efforts to enhance and develop the local yachting industry.

“Every year the Regatta brings visitors to our shores and I am pleased with the efforts of people such as Local Coordinator Phillip Walwyn, who ensures that St. Kitts remains on the scheduled list of stops each year.

“With the plans for Christophe Harbour, including the construction of a marina, it is imperative that the Federation becomes a yachting tourist destination and that yachting becomes a consistent component of our overall tourism product,” he explained.

Lazar noted that promoting St. Kitts and Nevis as a consummate yachting destination would bolster the Ministry’s efforts to move into the high-end tourism market, and that the Ministry “is always open to welcoming more regattas into our coastal waters”.
