    Director of Communications Mahlon Goma
Basseterre, St. Kitts (September 06, 2006):
Government is continuing its aggressive push to empower locals through the ownership of small businesses -which experts consider to be the driving force behind domestic economies.
Special interest rates on loans by government-linked financial institutions, entrepreneurship training courses and land and tax concessions are among the main methods used by government to get persons to become business owners rather than business workers.

These were among topics discussed on Tuesday, during SKNIS' live radio talk show Island Issues. Director of Communications Mahlon Goma hosted the show which featured Acting General Manager of the St. Kitts and Nevis Development Bank Len Harris.

Harris indicated that his bank operates under the premise of sustainable development for projects. He cited investments via student and housing loans to support his point. We want "to ensure success for the individual as well as the institution that will redound to the benefit of the economy in the long (run)," Harris revealed.

Charmaine 'Debbie" Francis, the proprietor of the Village Depot was also a guest on Island Issues. She explained how she became a success story having received funds from the Small Enterprise Development Unit and the National Empowerment Fund.
