BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A young man was arrested shortly after noon today (Apr. 27) following an altercation with another youth in Fort Street.

At about 12:15 p.m. today, SKNVibes heard the sound of gunfire in Fort Street.

On investigating, it was learnt that a shot was fired by a member of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force in an attempt to warn a cutlass-wielding young man to desist from his perceived intended action.

From eyewitness account, a young man had parked his bicycle on Fort Street and was about to enter a business place when two other young men, one armed with a cutlass, attacked him.

The cyclist escaped their wrath by running into the building between Heyliger Jewellers and Pharmcarre and was rescued by his mother, who operates a small business there.

Members of the Special Services Unit and officers from the Basseterre Police Station quickly arrived on the scene.

It was learnt that on their [police] arrival, one of the attackers was trying to make his way into the building in pursuit of the cyclist and an officer fired a single warning shot which caused him to stop and lie on the ground.

One of the two attackers was arrested and taken to the Basseterre Police Station but the other one escaped.
