Local ban on importation of Brazilian corned beef likely

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A decision has been made on the way forward in relation to a situation causing concerns across the region about processed meat originating in Brazil.

This comes as several countries in the region have banned the importation of corned beef from that country.

According to reports out of Brazil, the meat processors have in recent times been selling “rotten beef and poultry”, raising questions over the safety of the product.

Contacted for a comment, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Hazel Laws, confirmed to SKNVibes that a decision has been made on the way forward on the issue of the sale of Brazil-produced corned beef in St. Kitts and Nevis.

“A decision has been made and I am in the process of typing it up to be sent to the Ministers of Health, prior to release. So In short order, you would be receiving an official copy of the report.”

SKNVibes visited several supermarkets and found the EVE brand of corn beef on their shelves, with a Made in Brazil stamp.

Media reports in the region suggest the allegation of bribes being paid by these meat processors to obtain false sanitary licences.

Dominica and Jamaica were at least two countries, SKNVibes understands, which have implemented immediate bans on the importation of corned beef.

Additionally, outside of the EVE brand, Grace Kennedy which sources its corn beef from Brazil is expected to pull that from shelves in the region.
