BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Kim Collins Athletics Stadium would come alive this weekend, as some of the Federation’s top young student-athletes grace the track in the RAMS Primary School Championships.

The two-day event which gets underway on Saturday (Mar. 25) is merged with the CARIFTA Games trials.

Public Relations Officer at the St. Kitts and Nevis Amateur Athletics Association (SKNAAA) Evris Huggins, told SKNVibes that the event is anticipated to provide high-quality races and entertainment for the fans.

“The preparation from the schools has been good and we are in for some intense competition this weekend.”

This year, the SKNAAA has seen a high volume of student registration - a figure that is said to be more than 600.

“We have seen high participation for this year, after a very long time. We have 627 athletes, and we have seven out of the 18 participating schools with registrants of more than 40 athletes,” the PRO said.

Further, Huggins explained that each year the number of students has been rising, adding that on Tuesday last, the SKNAAA successfully hosted eliminations for a number of events leading up this weekend's Championship.

Against that backdrop, he noted that officials have seen a number of the athletes surpassing the qualifying standard set by the governing body.

According to Huggins, the expectations are for the athletes to perform at their best and come out on top.

The PRO noted that this is the final meet for the CARIFTA-bound athletes to attain the qualifying standard for the Games in order to be considered for selection.

“That is our expectation, as we have already seen qualifying performances from a few athletes. We had two athletes, thus far, qualifying for the CARIFTA Games, namely Jermaine Francis in the High Jump - he attained that mark last year July. And we also have Kizan Davis in Long Jump - who obtained a qualifying mark two weeks ago.”

Additionally, Huggins disclosed that the SKNAAA has also seen success in relation to the World U-18 Championship.

He noted that there are a number of athletes inching closer to the qualifying standard for both the CARIFTA Games and the World U-18 Championships - and SKNAAA is wishing the athletes all the success this weekend.
