PLP elects new executive

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A new executive for the People’s Labour Party was elected yesterday (Mar. 25) evening with Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris being returned as the party’s leader.

The party held its convention on the grounds of the Tabernacle Play Field where hundreds of individuals, many of whom donned the party’s colour – orange, gathered to show their support for the organisation.

The robust convention saw participation from members of the diplomatic corps, members of the Federal Cabinet and founding members of the PLP, among others.

While words of encouragement and support were given by the presenters, and cheers and applause were drawn from the participants, the meat of the matter did not take place until sometime later, when the new executive was nominated and installed.

Returning as National Leader of the PLP is Prime Minister Harris, and replacing His Excellency Sam Condor as Deputy Leader is Deputy Speaker of the Federal Parliament, Senator Akilah Byron-Nisbett.

Replacing Douglas Wattley as the PLP’s National Chairperson is Warren Thompson and Craig Tuckett has been returned as the Party’s Deputy Chairperson.

The post of General Secretary was held by Clecton Phillip and Myrtilla Williams now functions as the National Secretary.

The Deputy Secretary is Christophe Greaux, the National Party Organiser is Alexis Nisbett, the Treasurer is Victor Earl and his deputy is Claudette Thompson.

Condor, Wattley and Phillip were absent from the convention, with Condor previously indicating that he had an engagement overseas, and Phillip reportedly residing overseas.

Condor had previously expressed his intentions of mounting a legal challenge if the original executive – of which he was a part – was removed. And since the changes have been made, whether or not the legal action would be taken, is left to be seen.

The People’s Labour Party, which was founded in 2013, is part of the tripartite Team Unity Administration which is handling the affairs of the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis.
