BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – NEITHER rain nor cold weather was enough to stop determined students of the Dr. William Connor Primary school, from romping to victory and defending their National Schools athletics title over the weekend.

Watched on by a packed Kim Collins Athletics Stadium, Dr. William Connor Primary School students dominated the final day (Mar. 26) of the two-day event to be returned as champions.

The team brushed aside their rivals, Dieppe Bay Primary and the Sandy Point Primary, by topping the table with 17 Golds, 4 Silvers and 3 Bronzes.

Dieppe Bay Primary (9 Gold medals and 4 Bronze medals) and Sandy Point (6 Gold medals, 10 Silvers and 12 Bronze) occupied the second and third spots on the table.

The Dr. William Connor Primary School team from the rural area dominated in the Under-11 Girls 400m dash through Adaxia Berkeley; Jahrique Morrison in the Boys Under-9 Long Jump and Malique Wattley in the 60m hurdles.

Public Relations Officer at the SKNAAA, Evris Huggins told SKNVibes, that the association was pleased with the way the Meet was organized and the display of “raw talent from the students”.

He pointed out that he was impressed with a few athletes, adding that the general feedback they have received was positive and his impression of the Meet was “great”.

“Though you would have had a few outstanding athletes, I felt that the competition was very competitive. I saw the athletes applying a lot of modern techniques as it relates to execution of events, which is saying that our coaching education is where it ought to be.”

Meanwhile, back on the track, Morrison took home the title of the U-9 Boys individual champion after registering 30 points, beating out Sandy Point’s Cadin Mills who had 20 points.

Deychenelle Richardson of Sandy Point took the Girls U-9 title.

In the U-11 category, Berkeley took the crown, while Jahkeel Henderson won the boy's title. And in the U-13, Niran Warde topped the lot with 34 points in the Boys category, while on the distaff side, L’Nivea Nathan was at the top with 38 points.

Henderson and Nathan took home the best overall boy and girl title, respectively.

Attention now turns to the TDC interschool title, which gets underway on Saturday.
