BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - MINISTER of Education the Hon. Shawn Richards has disclosed that his Ministry is working to have Physical Education form part of the primary school curriculum for the new academic year.
This, the Minister noted, would assist in enhancing the athletic ability of junior athletes in St. Kitts and Nevis.
Speaking at the opening of the recently-held RAMS Primary School Championships, Richards explained that the government remains committed to the development of the country’s athletes.
“It was just last week, for example, we had a meeting in my office where we were looking at expanding the physical education programme in all of our primary schools,” Richard said.
Though the programme is currently in place in several secondary institutions and also at the lower level schools, it is not standardized to all institutions.
However, the Minister who is also responsible for Sports in the Federal Cabinet, told parents, teachers and students that very shortly “you can expect physical education to be part of the curriculum in all of the primary schools as an attempt is being made to further develop your athletics skills”.
More than 600 primary students were on show over the weekend at the Junior Meet, an improvement over last year's number.
The Minister thanked the Department of Sports and the St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletics Association for supporting the Meet, which saw the Dr. William Connor Primary defending their national title.
