Athletes impress at CARIFTA trials

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - SEVERAL top junior athletes are expected to participate in next month’s CARIFTA Games in Curacao, as they all put in impressive performances at the local trials.

Kizan David, Demetri Brown and Jermaine Francis all qualified for the Games - putting on a show for the hundreds of spectators gathered at the dual Meet over the weekend.

The athletes competed in the long jump and track events, using the meet as a practice for the Games.

Public Relations Officer of the St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletics Association Evris Huggins, told SKNVibes Sports that he was impressed with the performances.

He singled out those aforementioned athletes as some of the top performers that stood out. However, he was disappointed with some of the results at the event.

“We were expecting a few more persons to have qualified. We do understand that the standards are a bit hard, but that is mainly because the region naturally produces some of the best athletes in the world. The IAAF - as high as the presidency - dubs the CARIFTA Games as one of the most elite junior events in the world.

“So, the standards are very hard and I must commend our athletes for going out there and doing their best.”

Though the SKNAAA submitted the final list of athletes that would have attained the qualifying mark for the CARIFESTA Games, no official announcement has been made outside of the three confirmed.

At Sunday’s (Mar. 26) Meet, Brown sought to qualify in the Boys U-18 Long Jump but fell short by some five meters, SKNVibes Sports was told.

Francis, who qualified for the Games back in 2016, dominated the field in the high jump with a height of 2.05 meters.

Meanwhile, David qualified in the long jump at the fifth of the Development Meets on the SKNAAA’s Calendar.

Some of those athletes are expected to return to the track this weekend for the TDC Inter High School Championship at the Kim Collins Athletics Stadium.

The CARIFTA Games are slated to be held over the East Weekend.
