CEMSS annihilate competition on Day 1 of Interschool Championship

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WITH 13 Golds more that their closest rivals, athletes of the Charles E Mills Secondary School (CEMSS), are in a very strong position to retain their title as the TDC Interschool Athletics Champions.

Led by their national athlete Demetri Brown, the CEMSS dominated in all areas in the first of the two-day championship, with 21 golds, 11 silvers and 6 bronze medals. It is being trailed by the Washington Archibald High School with 8 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze medals and the Charlestown Secondary School occupies the third spot with six golds, 6 silver and 11 bronze medals.

Watched on by a fair-sized crowd in chilly weather, Brown opened his medal haul in the Boys U-18 200m, where he took the lead and blew the field away – winning by some 10 meters.

Later in the evening, Brown would steal a victory in the Boys U-18 4x400m relay for his team, running down athletes from the Washington Archibald High School and the Charlestown Secondary.

Collecting the baton in third, the CEMSS athlete would make up ground on the top two at the 200m mark, before blazing down the back end of the track leaving the competition to breathe his dust.

Mid-way through that day’s events, all attention was turned to the opening ceremony and the march-past of the teams.

CEMSS, as the defending champions, lead the procession of teams, but what was to come had the spectators and officials in “awe” and left their competitors in wait.

The team stopped in the middle of the track and put on an artistic display of dance and creativity which, as one spectator shouted, was “fitting for a dance defending champion”.

In other results from Day 1, CEMSS’ Jahnaza Francis dominated the field in the Boys U-18 400m Hurdles to cop the Gold by three seconds.

CEMSS would batter the field in the Girls U-18 800m to gain the top two spots through Aliah Vanterpool and Nickeisha Howe.

The competition continues today with several sprint and field events, where the Charles E Mills Secondary School athletes are expected to continue their domination.

Marquee events on the schedule for today are the Boys 400m, the 100m series and the 4x100m relays.
