PLP to capitalise on the massive groundswell of post-convention support to move ahead

By: Peter Ngunjiri, Press Release

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, April 5, 2017 (PLP PR Media Inc.) -- Buoyed by the success of its recently held inaugural National Convention that was held in rural St. Kitts, the newly elected National Executive of the Dr the Hon Timothy Harris-led Peoples Labour Party (PLP) has hit the ground running as it moves the party forward.

“We certainly will be taking advantage of this momentum going forward,” said Mr Warren Thompson, PLP’s newly elected National Chairman. “The party within itself has been strengthened by those of us who are now fully involved. We have new strength in the party; we have members of the executive who bring to the table experience and qualifications in different professions so that the party can better address the needs of the people of St. Kitts.”

Mr Thompson made reference to the new National Executive’s first meeting held on Sunday April 2, at the Party’s Secretariat in Tabernacle which was also attended by the National Political Leader, Dr the Hon Timothy Harris. He outlined how the party, moving forward will reach out to all the people as that is the only way the Team Unity Movement can continue to represent everyone’s interests.

“We want to reach people of all walks of life, and encourage them to play an active part in the party,” noted Mr Thompson. “So we will build on this momentum, particularly now that we have greater numbers of young people, by running a series of activities across all communities to give people a voice, as well as to enable them to better connect.”

The PLP’s National Chairman explained that any party that does not embrace the youth has no future. He commented that it would be critical for the Peoples Labour Party to get young people involved in the party’s activities even if they are not at the voting age. The party would provide the youth activities at educational and social levels to encourage them because PLP is not just a party for people who can vote.

A highly successful social event the youth participated in large numbers was the monthly Dr Harris Constituency Number Seven Health Walk which was held on Saturday April 1. For the first time it was attended by persons from the entire island as opposed to its original mandate that people in Constituency Seven and their friends took part.

“It was pleasing with the numbers and of course this is now like a national event,” observed Mr Thompson. “It is a big difference from just having the constituency. it was really good to have others from throughout the entire country coming and being a part of it, and on the back of the convention and showing how this has now extended into being a national event. It has certainly grown beyond the Number Seven constituency.”

The newly elected PLP’s National Secretary Ms Myrtilla Williams, said that the party’s inaugural National Convention held on Saturday March 25 was the first that she would have participated and commented that she understood a party convention to be the democratic process that allows the people who are members of that party to express themselves through nominations of who they want be the officers of the party.

“It was a PLP convention but you could see the presence of our partners in Team Unity, the Hon Vance Amory, the Hon Mark Brantley, Hon Shawn Richards, Hon Lindsay Grant, Hon Eugene Hamilton, Hon Ian Patches Liburd, Hon Wendy Phipps, Hon Vincent Byron,” said Ms Williams. “It was wonderful, and though it was PLP, it made me feel like it was a part of the promise that was made to be in Unity for all the people. I can’t forget that.”

She commended PLP’s Political Leader Dr the Hon Timothy Harris for being a man with the vision, with the energy and the push to make things happen, and a man who embraces people.

“Dr Harris knows how to build communities,” explained Ms Williams. “He knows how to build relationships and it is about people. People matter and I am so happy that the PLP is about putting people first, and that is one of the reasons why I feel honoured and comfortable to be a part of the PLP movement.”

In the meantime, some of the founding members of the Peoples Labour Party have been saying that the original team of PLP’s founding members, with the exception of about four, are still active and some were elected to serve on the new National Executive.

They pointed out that no one was barred from attending the convention and taking part in the party’s nominations contrary to some non-factual information that is being peddled around.

“Some people who were there are no longer there, some people who were there are still there,” stated Mr Antonio Maynard, a founding member of the PLP. “This is a natural course of any political party. The persons who replaced them (those no longer in the party) are suitable persons with the required capacity, intelligence and qualifications for any organisation.”

In making reference to the newly elected members to serve on the Peoples Labour Party’s National Executive, Mr Maynard said: “The most significant post that was elected and replaced an incumbent was for the deputy leadership, and I think Akilah Byron-Nisbett (newly elected Deputy National Political Leader) has all the attributes that would qualify her for such post.”

He added: “I believe she is more prepared now than the incumbent was when he first got into politics. I am satisfied on the present executive elected at the last convention; it is as good as any in the region.”
