Draft crime reduction strategy to go to Cabinet shortly

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE draft crime reduction strategy stemming from a symposium held about two months ago, is expected to be presented to the Federal Cabinet shortly.

This is according to Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Osmond Petty.

In a recent and exclusive interview with SKNVibes, Petty explained that following the hosting of the symposium, each participating stakeholder group submitted their proposal/strategy for addressing the different roots of crime.

He explained that having been in receipt of these, he has undertaken to compile and summarize the information into a report which he hopes to present to Cabinet shortly.

“What I have done is I have prepared a report on the symposium which is just about ready to be sent to the Cabinet. The draft strategy will be part of that report and it will be a summary of the submissions made by the various stakeholder groups.

“What you understand is that many stakeholders groups worked on a particular root of crime so I had to combine the submissions and summarize so that we have one submission with the main points. So you will have a draft strategy which will be based on a summary of the submissions under each root of crime.”

International Social Skills Consultant and Crime Reduction Specialist Dr. Neals Chitan, who provided guidance during the exercise at the symposium, told SKNVibes he saw the draft strategy and is pleased with it.

The more than 100 stakeholders who were involved in the process of devising a crime-reduction strategy, hailed from various groups across the Federation.

Dr. Chitan told this publication that if the strategy is implemented, recognizable and real change in the Federation’s crime situation would be realized if there is a sustained and concerted push from the various stakeholder groups.

Petty explained that these groups would be responsible for implementing the various legs of the combined strategy.

“The basic strategy will be to ask the stakeholder groups to implement what they say they want to implement and the Ministry of National Security and Government will have an umbrella framework to coordinate and assist the various groups to deliver what they say they would.”

Asked for a time by which the draft is to be submitted to the Cabinet, PS Petty refrained from divulging that information, save to indicate that as soon as he is finished putting the final touches on the document, it would be forwarded.
