Committee finalizing preparatory work for construction of new BHS

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A committee, headed by the Director of the Public Works Department, is currently working to ensure that all systems are in place for the construction of the new Basseterre High School.

Minister of Education the Hon. Shawn Richards, in updating the media at the Prime Minister’s recent monthly press conference, reminded that the school would be built in the Ponds Extension area. He noted that since that announcement was made, another committee was established “to ensure that all things are there to begin the actual construction of the school”.

He explained that the last update he received indicated that the committee was well on its way towards the construction phase.

“As a matter of fact, a directive was issued to ensure that the plans are actually being to be put on paper so that the school construction can begin.”

Students who attended the institution at the Victoria Road Campus, as well as staff members, began complaining in 2012 of illnesses which they believed were caused by their surroundings at that campus. They were subsequently moved and were occupying the facility of the Washington Archibald High School in a shift system.

Several health institutions, including the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), carried out sample tests at the Basseterre High compound and all returned inclusive results on what caused the illnesses.

While in opposition, the Team Unity Movement vowed that if elected, it would not allow the students to return to the Victoria Road location of the school but would rather construct a new school.

After taking office, the Team Unity Administration moved to have the students relocated and bring an end to the shift system.

The government has since constructed a temporary facility to house the students while plans are being made for the construction of a new and permanent school.

The temporary facility sits in front of the Beach Allen Primary School.
