The event, held under the auspices of PLP Leader, Dr the Hon Timothy Harris who is also the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, included other sporting disciplines and was serenaded by the evergreen Sylvester Masquerades. It was a perfect illustration that vibrant culture is very much alive and well in the Federation.

“When we agreed several years back to organise this kite flying competition we were looking for traditional values, things that help keep our communities together, build trust, allow opportunities for young people to come together sometimes in competitive ways but nonetheless learning to build their ability to work together,” said Prime Minister Harris who was greatly appreciated by the fun-goers for his presence at all the events.

“They have come together and engaged constructively in an endeavour which we all enjoy,” he said. “I want to give credit to Ms Myrtilla Williams because she has expanded upon the idea to help make it more of a family day. So the idea of dominos competition, the bouncing castle and other activities which have been added, are all intended to ensure that we had a range of events that would bring the whole family together on the very spiritual day of Good Friday.”

Kites of all shapes and sizes were on display at the event, and were operated by persons of all ages, from as young as one year, to the 75-year old Mr Norris Taylor. Some were as large as a house, according to one of the organisers Mr Warren Thompson.

Despite the lack of strong winds to make their creations float as high as they would have wished, they nonetheless did their part to the delight of the vividly excited onlookers who also included the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Shawn Richards, and the Senator Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett.
