BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MISS GUYANA, Xamiera Kippings, was on Saturday evening (Apr. 15) adjudged winner of the FLOW Miss Black San Regional Swimsuit Pageant.

The inaugural pageant, which was held at the Sandy Point Hard Court, had seen seven beauties from around the Caribbean and Africa vying for the title.

However, it was an impressive Miss Guyana who wowed the patrons and judges with her elegance and speech, taking the top awards in all of the judged segments – Best Vintage Wear, Best Top Model, Identical, Battle of the Brushes and Best Interview.

Amassing 880.5 points, Kippings not only captured the crown, she also walked away with a cash prize of US$1,000.

The First Runner-up spot went to Miss Haiti, Seydina Allen, who tallied 797 points; while Miss St. Kitts, Cariela Liburd, with 786 copped the Second Rupper-up position; and Miss Jamaica, Roushell Reign, was the Third Runner-up with 782.5 points.

The other participants were Naomi Davis of Senegal, Sonial Paul of Antigua and Taitu Goodwin of Anguilla. Miss Anguilla however was withdrawn on the night of the pageant; a decision that was taken by her team.

It was observed that Miss Guyana and her team were all smiles when the South American was crowned by the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. Shawn Richards, who is also the Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Five, of which Sandy Point is a part.

In addition to the crown and the cash prize, Miss Guyana will be representing the Black San Committee at the Caribbean New York Fashion Week in September.

According to the event’s Chairperson, Treasa Wyatt, since its inception, the Black San Pageant had only catered to local competitors, but based on feedback and requests, the regional version was born.

“Last year we introduced a new segment called Top Designer, where we had designers competing from different countries. The pageant caught the attention of a number of  countries and many girls wanted to compete and gain the experience,” the Chairperson explained.

Wyatt, who is no stranger to pageantries, noted: “There is no other regional swim suit pageant that we know exists, so the other girls wanted to try this one. They like the uniqueness of it, in that it has a vintage wear, beach wear, the top model and the battle of the brushes.”.

Against that backdrop, a total of 10 countries had registered to participate, but according to Wyatt, they decided to reduce the number, this being their first attempt at the regional level.

“We had at least 10 countries that signed on and, we as a Committee, decided not to go beyond a certain number because we wanted to try it for the first time and ensure that all the flaws and hiccups that we would have encountered would be identified and remedied for next year. Next year we would definitely have more countries participating.”

Wyatt stated that the feedback they received from Saturday’s event were positive, with many people indicating that “had it not been for the inclement weather more patrons would have attended”.

“Many persons in Sandy Point felt good to have this pageant in the community and many are still saying that event was good,” she added.

The local version of the Black San Pageant is one of the activities for the Sandy Point community’s annual Black San Bang-a-Lang Festival, and that version was held in March.
