CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – POLICE have confirmed yesterday’s (Apr. 25) shooting incident in Cotton Ground, Nevis and have provided the names of the two men who died.

In a press release received shortly before noon today, police stated that initial investigations revealed that shortly before 5:00 p.m. 25-year-old Shariff Williams of Colquolouns Housing Project and 21-year-old Elvis Lawrence of Cotton Ground were shot by unknown assailant(s) in the vicinity of a local bar in Cotton Ground.

It also stated that both victims were taken to the Alexandra Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.

The release further stated that Commissioner of Police Ian Queeley said: “This incident brings to the fore the importance of the general public working with the police in the fight against crime. Too many of these incidents are happening in broad daylight and witnesses are not coming forward. We all have a social responsibility to do our part to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice and an atmosphere of peace and tranquility prevail in our communities. These senseless acts of violence are eroding the very foundation of our communities. It must stop, let us work together, I beseech.”

Commissioner Queeley also called on anyone who might have information about this and any other crime, as well as any criminal activity in the community, to come forward and share it with the police.

“Persons can assist the police in this crime, or any other crime by calling any police station in the Federation, Crime Stoppers, our confidential hotline, at 1-800-8477(TIPS) or by using the SKN Crime Reporter App on their Smartphone to share the information," he added.

The release, however, did not provide any information on a third shooting victim. However, SKNVibes has learnt that he underwent surgery and is warded at the hospital.

According to information reaching this media house, the three men were among a group of young men sitting on a wall in the vicinity of a bar in Cotton Ground when a number of masked men, dressed in black, exited a vehicle and fired a volley of shots in their direction before making good their escape in the said vehicle.

Lawrence had reportedly died at the scene and Williams, along with the other injured man, was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

There have been four shooting-deaths in Cotton Ground over a 31-day period.

The first was that of 23-year-old Randell Chapman of Rawlins Village, who was gunned down by two masked assailants while he was observing a cricket match being played at the Cotton Ground Playfield on Sunday (Mar. 26).

Twenty-two days after (Apr. 17), a 28-year-old mother of two, Morella Webbe was shot while seated in a car near her Cotton Ground home and succumbed to her injuries at the Alexandra Hospital.

Shariff Williams and Elvis Lawrence’s death have taken to nine the number of homicides committed in the twin-island Federation for this year; five on Nevis and four on St. Kitts.
