Agriculture Open Day to focus on efficiency in changing environment

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - OFFICIALS at the Department of Agriculture have indicated that this year’s ‘Open Day’ would be a much more improved, as against the one held in 2016.

This year, the Department is hosting the two-day affair under the theme ‘Boosting Efficiency in the face of a Changing Environment’, which its Director, Melvin James, told SKNVibes that it was chosen because of the variances they have seen taking place in the environment.

He explained that when it comes to the subject of the environment and agriculture, it is broad-based and points to climatic changes, economic matters and social development, among other areas.

So, at this year’s event, which would be held on April 27-28 at the Department’s La Guerite-based location, exhibitors will showcase displays centered around efficiency within the agriculture sector, such as hydroponics, organic matter and green houses.

“Those are the kinds of things that you would see how best we can use water...irrigation. We would be explaining to persons about the uncertainties in the climate and those conditions; things that we need to do and move away from the ad hoc planting,” James added.

He noted that a similar initiative would be undertaken in the livestock sector, pointing to demonstrations on pasture grass, artificial insemination and improved breeds. “Because, really and truly, we would like to get the public to go along with us in terms of advancing agriculture.”

The Department has seen an increase in registration and, according to Director James, that was based on the level of organisation that persons have grown accustomed to with the Open Day initiative.

“A lot of people have registered. We are up in terms of registration and also we are out there in terms of our promotion.”

Planning, SKNVibes was told, started very early and the Agriculture Department has dedicated a lot of resources into staging the event.

Noticeably different this year is the inclusion of Taiwan’s Embassy, which would take over the Conference Room at the Department and showcase a number initiatives including the Orientals, like their tea culture, James said.

“We are going to be having a number of the usual displays along with some additional stuff, and we are looking forward to the general public coming out,” James explained.

The Director wants people to come out in their numbers, including those from Nevis, to be part of the excitement.
