    European Tour Round 2

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WITH a number of international friendlies on this year’s calendar, the period of inactivity of St. Kitts and Nevis national men’s football team will come to an end in June.

In a recent interview, Stanley Jacobs, General Secretary of the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association (SKNFA), told reporters that the team is expected to play several friendly matches beginning in June.

Those games, he said, are part of the Second European Tour for the Sugar Boyz.

“Well, as you might be aware, the national team is expected to play its first batch of internationals in June on the 4th and 7th. On the 4th of June we would play Armenia and on the 7th, June we would play against Georgia. Both of those matches would take place in Europe. It would be our second tour to Europe and we expect that the national team would do us proud.”

The Sugar Boyz inactivity at the international level has seen them plummeting 26 spots; from their high of 73 achieved in 2016 to 99 this year.

On their first trip to European in 2015, the team defeated Andorra 1-0 before going under to Estonia 3-nil.

However, in their last fixture back in November, the team drew 1-1 with Estonia, with what many described as a second-string team.

That game had followed their shocking extra time defeat by Haiti in the Caribbean.

SKNVibes has learnt that the team is expected to play a friendly international against Barbados at Warner Park on Saturday, May 6.

Meanwhile, the female teams from St. Kitts and Nevis would also be in action later this year.

According to Jacobs, this year would see two key women’s tournament qualifiers being held in the likes of the Girls U-17 World Cup and the U-20 Competitions.

“These matches are expected to start in August, and so the teams are already in preparation. All in all, a lot is still in store for football in St. Kitts and Nevis, and we know the game would continue to grow.”
