No decision yet on lifting Corned Beef Ban

BASSETTERRE, St. Kitts – HEALTH officials in St. Kitts and Nevis are yet to make a decision on lifting the ban imposed on corned beef imported from Brazil.

St. Lucia, Jamaica, and Barbados are just a few of the islands that have lifted their the ban on the South American country’s beef product.

When asked for an update by reporters yesterday (Apr. 27), Senior Minister of Health Minister Hon. Eugene Hamilton confirmed that the ban was no lifted and offered an explanation for for the delay in the decision-making process.

“In fact, I should categorically say that they have not lifted it, but I believe that they are reviewing the decision at this point. The Chief Veterinary Officer, who is the key person with responsibility for meat, should be giving her opinion to a technical group that was headed by the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Laws.

“They put the ban in place while it was only beef that was reported.  I think the ban went a little further and banned other products coming out of Brazil for safety of the population.”

SKNVibes recently reported that the Chief Veterinary Officer at the Agriculture Department had indicated that she had completed various tests on corned beef out of Brazil and had submitted her findings to the various agencies, including Health officials, for a decision to be made on the way forward.

She indicated that tests were done for the Total Aerobic Plate Count to determine if bacteria such as Yeast and Mold, Coliform, Listeria and Salmonella species, among others, were present in the imported item.

Hamilton disclosed that he had  learnt earlier in the week that two OECS countries had lifted the ban, noting that he is expecting an update before the week is over.

The Minister stressed that he was not aware of any strained relationship that St. Kitts and Nevis has with their South American counterparts in light of the ban.

“Our import from Brazil might just be a small blip in the overall numbers that they export. I would think that Jamaica would be taking more from Brazil. We were hasty? I don’t think [so] and expect the Brazilians to say anything different, frankly…”

That statement came in the wake of Brazil indicating to the Health and Agriculture Minister in Jamaica that they were too hasty in instituting the ban.
