National Museum burglarised; computer stolen

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THIEVES continue to make the lives of some entrepreneurs, citizens and residents of St. Kitts uncomfortable, as the latest of their victims is the St. Christopher National Trust, formerly known as the National Museum, on Port Zante.

According to information reaching SKNVibes, either late Friday night (Apr. 28) or early the following morning, a thief or thieves had broken into the building and stole a laptop computer.

The bandit(s) had reportedly cut several locks and made their way into the building and cart off the computer, which is said to store some very valuable information for the organisation.

They also ransacked an office and forced open a donation box which this media house understands did not contain any money at the time.

In an interview with local news entity SKN Newsline, Executive Director of the St. Christopher National Trust, Ryllis Percival indicated that it was a sad occasion for the museum, as they were in the process of launching an exhibition on Government House.

She explained that all the collated information was stored on that computer “and so, as much as you can replace a laptop, you can’t replace the information that you had gotten”.

Percival further explained that shortly after 7:00 a.m. yesterday (Apr. 29), upon approaching the museum, the cleaner had noticed that the gates to the building were unlocked and on investigating saw a door to one of the offices was also unlocked.

She later reported the matter and the police were summoned to the scene.

Director Percival disclosed that plans were afoot to install security cameras at the museum but that was going through a process of approval.

She however indicated that the break-in would spur officials to speed up the process.
