Sugar Boyz edge Bajans in International Friendly

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Barbados Men’s National team was the latest victim of team St. Kitts and Nevis, as the Sugar Boyz continue on their winning ways in a 2-1 victory last evening (May 6) at Warner Park.

Playing before a fair-sized crowd, the home team showed more energy and demonstrated the determination to leave their happy fans with smiling faces.

From the blast of the first whistle, the Sugar Boyz brought much pressure to bear on the Bajans defence, while creating a number of goal scoring opportunities.

Though some of those early opportunities were squandered, a determined Javeim Blanchette ensured that his team drew first blood by finding the back of the Bajan net in the 9th minute.

However, in the dying moments of the first half, a powerful low strike by Rashad Jules that went through the goalkeeper’s legs like a bullet from a gun, equalised the score.

Not to be outdone, a strike by Carlos Bertie in the 73rd minute, which was the talk of the evening, provided the decider of the match.

But though many of the home team fans were excited about the decider, many football lovers, who wanted to see a fair battle between the two teams, claimed that the goal was an illegal goal.

It was clear that Bertie was offside, as he was beyond the last defender when the ball was passed to him, but the linesman did not flag it.

Coach of the St. Kitts-Nevis team, Jacques Passy told reporters that it was good that they came away with the victory, but his unit did not play consistent football.

He explained that the team played well for the first 25 minutes into the game but fell away after that.

“The first 25 minutes were brilliant. From the 25th minute of the first half until the 20th minute of the second half I wasn’t satisfied at all. I thought that we couldn’t control the game, and football is a game that you have to control either by possession or by the way you play. At the end of the day, we got the result because of the first 25 minutes and the last 25 minutes.”

He added that overall, the team performance was “decent”.

Passy noted that some of his team’s objectives were achieved and they are now working to get better for their friendly matches in Europe next month.

Barbados’ coach, Ahmed Mohamed said he was pleased with his team’s performance but insinuated that it was a bitter pill to swallow when you are on the losing end.

“My players gave 200%. We dominated the game with fewer mistakes, but sometimes when you don’t score you get the loss.”
