Investigations into SIDF and Electoral Breaches still active

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ATTORNRY-GENERAL Hon. Vincent Byron Jr. has informed that investigations they initiated upon taking office in 2015 “are still active”, as the Government continues to be criticised for their slothful action.

Asked about the investigations into the Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation (SIDF) and the alleged breaches at the Electoral Office, the AG said: “There have been active and ongoing investigations over the past two years. These are not easy investigations.”

Many have lambasted the Government for not releasing timely information on the progress of the two investigations, especially that relating to breaches at the Electoral Office.

However, investigation into the SIDF had seen the Government soliciting the support of international accounting firm Ernst and Young.

That firm had completed its forensic audit and had given a report to Cabinet, parts of which were laid before the National Assembly.

AG Byron, who is also the Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, noted that the Government is now engaging the same firm to go further in relation to bring charges against those culpable of malpractice.

“We are now engaged in having them go further to get legal support to give us recommendations as to what if, who to and when to issue charges, if any against anyone responsible. These have been clear investigations going on.”

Just recently the Government received a report from those responsible for overseeing the SIDF concerning matters relating to Kittitian Hill and Christophe Harbour.

Those two developmental projects were heavily criticised several years ago by the current Administration, when in opposition, as areas that would be under the microscope for investigation.

“So there are active ongoing investigations, not just in terms of any potential criminal activity but also in terms of how to make corrective action to significant investments that have been made in this country under the last Administration that has gone off the rails.”
