BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – REPORTS reaching SKNVibes state that Dwayne Martin and his wife, Carla Hendrickson, were some time last week each sentenced to serve three years at Her Majesty’s Prison for unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

On Thursday, May 29, 2014, police ranks and members of Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise Department’s Enforcement Unit had conducted a search of the couple’s Harbour View, Bird Rock home and discovered a .40 Glock 23 semi-automatic pistol with 13 matching rounds under a bed in their bedroom.

They were subsequently charged with the two offences but gained their pre-trial liberty in the sum of $100,000 each with two sureties and under a number of conditions.

When Martin and Hendrickson appeared in the Basseterre High Court in June last year, it had taken the jury a little over an hour to return a guilty verdict, unanimously. But the trial judge, Justice Marlene Carter, had ordered their social inquiry reports and had set a date in July for sentencing while they remained on bail.

However, sentencing was not until last week due to a number of adjournments, including their attorney, Dr. Henry Browne Q.C, challenging Justice Carter’s replacement as the new Resident High Court Judge, claiming that he was not the sitting judge at the trial.

According to reports, when passing sentence on the couple, Justice Trevor Warde took into consideration that they are parents to two young children and that their social inquiry reports stated they had expressed remorse.
