BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – OFFICERS of the Special Services Unit (SSU) of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force have removed yet another firearm and a very large amount of ammunition off the streets of the Federation.

As part of its strategy to rid the country of illegal drugs, firearm and ammunition, the RSCNPF has increased not only its members’ presence within communities, especially hot spots, but it has also up the ante in its search operations, nicknamed “Operation Tempo”.

This Operation, according to a police communiqué, yielded positive results last night and early this morning (May 20 when officers of the SSU executed a search warrant on a Carifesta Village residence and searches in the Frigate Bay area, specifically The Strip.

The communiqué indicated that last night’s search in Carifesta Village resulted in the discovery of 98 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

Four persons were at the residence at the time but only one of them was taken into custody along with the ammunition.

The communiqué stated that follow-up investigations led the officers to the Frigate Bay area, where one Taurus 9mm Pistol with seven matching rounds were discovered in a clump of bushes.

Three persons were subsequently taken into custody and investigations are ongoing.

This find has taken to nine the number of illegal firearms removed from the Federation’s streets for this month and 22 for the year.

In his comments on these recent finds, Commissioner of Police Ian Queeley said: “The continued success by our officers in removing illegal firearms from our communities is a result of two main factors; intelligence-led policing and an unwavering commitment by our officers to Citizen Safety.

“As we continue our efforts,  a partnership with the community is essential, and so I am echoing my call for citizens to get involved in our get the guns off the streets campaign.”

The Commissioner stressed that gun violence must be reduced and declared that only by working hand-in-hand would the police and the community would have the impact that they all want to see.

“If you See Something,  Say Something,” he added.

The police have reiterated that members of the public could share information with them by calling any police station, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477(TIPS) or by using the SKN Crime Reporter App on their Smartphones.  .
