Development Bank rallies round Nevis Masters Cricket Club - it is a Fresh Start

President of the Nevis Masters Cricket Club Mr Franklyn Daniel receiving sponsorship cheque from Ms Hyacinth Pemberton, Nevis Branch Manager of the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis
By: Peter Ngunjiri, Press Release

CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (May 24, 2017) -- Everyone wants to quickly forget what happened last year when the big boys of the Leeward Islands Masters Cricket Tournament, Nevis Masters Cricket Club, seeking an unprecedented four-peat win ended up going down to hosts St. Croix.

This year’s Leeward Islands Masters Cricket Tournament bowls off on Friday May 26 in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, and President of the Nevis Masters Cricket Club Mr Franklyn Daniel, told his perennial sponsor the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis that while they are not going to St. Thomas as the defending champion, they are still the team to beat.

Mr Daniel who was briefing Ms Hyacinth Pemberton the Nevis Branch Manager of the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis, on Tuesday May 23 on receiving this year’s sponsorship cheque, explained that last year when they played in St. Croix and lost to the hosts in the final two of their dependable players who live in the USA had not turned up.

He informed Ms Pemberton that the two players will be part of the Nevis Masters Cricket Club team this year. “The players who are coming from the USA are Charles ‘Yellow’ Hendrickson and Cardel Walters, who were absent last year, but will be joining us in St. Thomas this week,” observed Mr Daniel.

He however added that they will be playing without their captain, Carl Tuckett, who will be doing duty for the West Indies Cricket in St. Kitts. According to Mr Daniel, the club’s vice-captain Wendell Wallace who has held that position for many years will step up in the ranks of the captain, and will be ably assisted by Derrick Parry, a senior player on the team who has vast experience.

“Over the years the Bank has been a sponsor for the Nevis Masters Cricket Club and to date we have been satisfied with their performance,” said Ms Hyacinth Pemberton. “We at the Bank see their loss last year as a little hiccup. Everyone deserves a fresh start and by sponsoring them this year we are giving them a fresh start to get back to their former glory.”

The President of the Nevis Masters Cricket Club assured the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis official that the team this year, even without their captain, is more balanced as apart from the two players who are coming from the USA, they have added three new players to the team.

Eight teams, Antigua, St. Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla, St. Maarten, Tortola, St. Croix, and hosts St. Thomas will be taking part in the three-day tournament. According to Mr Daniel, Nevis is going to reclaim what is rightfully theirs as it is the team that would have won more times than any other.

The tournament starts from Friday May 26 to Sunday May 28 Friday. According to the President of the Nevis Masters Cricket Club, part of his team was due to depart on Wednesday May 24, and the rest of the team would depart on Thursday May 25. The team’s manager is Mr Oscar ‘Astro’ Browne.

“With regards to our development, financially and otherwise, we have long associated ourselves with the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis, and not only they have been able to sponsor us, but I think we have made great strides in forging great friendship as well,” explained Mr Daniel as he thanked Ms Pemberton.

“And when I say friendship it is just not for the sake of cricket, because I guess Hyacinth (Ms Pemberton) could tell that quite a few of our Masters players have been doing some business here, and that we are hoping that will improve over the years,” added Mr Daniel.  “We are hoping as well that we are able to maintain this friendship in business so together we can grow as we develop the team.”

In accepting Mr Daniel’s words of thank you, Ms Pemberton acknowledged that “apart from the sponsorship, we have developed a relationship with some of the members. Some of them are now business clients of ours.”

Mr Daniel concluded by saying: “What I would want to echo throughout the Federation and most specific at home in Nevis, that the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis is at our doorsteps and we need to lend our support and hold it just like our own.

“The members of staff at the bank are very warm and friendly; you can walk in through their doors anytime. Hyacinth and her staff will be there to welcome you guys, so I am appealing to the general public to utilise the services that the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis is offering.”
